Let’s face it, this year Valentine’s Day falls on a depressing Tuesday, not exactly the best date night. However, here are five original Paris date ideas that you could do either right on February 14th… or why not celebrate lovers’ day either the weekend before or after? Whatever date you choose, you’re bound to shake up your date night with these cool activities. 1,000 Leagues Under Valentine’s Night
Couldn’t manage a romantic getaway to Tahiti or the Seychelles for Valentine’s Day? Fear not. A trip to the tropics will only cost you 30 euros by making your way to the Aquarium de Paris which is once again hosting a special Valentine’s Night. Found underneath the Palais de Chaillot at Trocadero the aquarium features over 10,000 fish of 500 different species. Your Valentine’s entrance ticket includes a do-it yourself visit from 7pm to 9.30pm (plenty of low lighting to steal kisses!) followed by a glass of champagne. There also have a dinner add on option (I hope fish from their tanks aren’t on the menu!). The views of the twinkling Eiffel Tower that you can observe afterwards are free 🙂 Further information and tickets here.
A Theatrical Valentine’s Day
The unique concept, Theatre in Paris, has three shows taking place on Valentine’s Day itself and several the evenings before and afterwards. They provide spectators not fluent in French with the opportunity of watching French plays thanks to their innovative system of English surtitles and often in special, historic theaters around the city. If you’re free during the day on February 14th, you can catch an afternoon show of one of France’s greatest ladies’ men, Cyrano de Bergerac. Otherwise in the evening you can attend Anything You Want, about the problems of happiness on a playwright with writer’s block, and The Prize, about an award winning Historian whose life is about to get messy. See their full program and purchase tickets on their website here. OR you still have a few days to enter our Valentine’s Day contest to win two free tickets!
Heart Beats Symphony
Want to get heart to heart with your sweetheart? You can by attending one of the upcoming performances of Heart Beats Symphony. Written and directed by Maéva Fabre and put on by the Pursuit Company, this is a unique theatre production performed in English with French surtitles. A “theatrical tribute to simple emotions that make great life’s symphonies,” the play aims to explore the different emotions that make our heart beats and, at the base, what makes us human. This is played out in short sketches that explore feelings from passion to compassion and from devotion to phobia and from joy to loss, expressed in creative, surprising, and often very funny, ways. The symphony is cleverly orchestrated with the assistance of video, lighting and sound completing an overall successful melody of our emotions. The audience’s heartstrings are pulled, its spirits are lifted and its emotions hopefully not left untouched by the end of the show. The Heart Beats Symphony is playing every Wednesday and Thursday until February 16th at the Aktéon Théâtre. Tickets are between 12-18 euros and are available here.
Laugh Your Way through the Louvre
You can combine a love of art with a love of laughter during one of comedian Cedrik Verdure’s new shows … at the Louvre? Really? Who would have thought that Roman statues and Rembrandt could be entertaining, but they are courtesy of the witty reparté of Monsieur Verdure presented in his “Laugh Your Way through the Louvre“. After a successful running of his One Indian Show and regular appearances on the English and French standup circuit in Paris, Verdure decided to bring together his experience in comedy with that as an art historian. The result would even make Napoléon crack a smile. The two hour show, held in small groups, finishes up in a nearby café where you can have a few more laughs with your group in a relaxed setting. An original way to tour the Louvre and possibly meet some other fellow travelers if you’re passing through town. There are a number of performances coming up such as both the Saturday before at after Valentine’s Day and the day after Valentine’s Day, all at 2 pm. It cost 38 euros including the museum ticket and beverage, you can book here or learn more about Cedrik at this link.
Croissants & Corsets Brunch
On the third Sunday of the month, so on Sunday February 19th, the Burlesque Moulin takes over Le Biz restaurant for the hottest brunch in town! Croissants & Corsets, created by the Franco-American troupe Burlesque Moulin, is an American-style brunch to the backdrop of an eclectic and titillating show featuring song, dance, and, most importantly… burlesque! For 35 euros you are served a cross-cultural brunch of American bacon and eggs and an unhealthy but oh-so-delicious dose of French viennoiseries, charcuterie and fromage. Of course this comes with juice, hot drinks, wine, bubbles and an effervescent bilingual show! The Biz Restaurant & Lounge is at 18, rue Favart, 75002 but advanced reservations are required — you can even save 5 euros by booking through Billet Reduc and just for VDay they are offering just the show and a drink for 15 euros. A seductive way to celebrate Valentine’s Day… and we won’t ask what you’ll get up to afterwards!
Le Cabaret Burlesque on the Seine
In the shadow of Notre Dame is a racy show that must have those saints on the facade wanting to pick up their heads and hightail it to another cathedral! Every Friday and Saturday nights at 11 pm, La Nouvelle Seine péniche-barge hosts the artists of the Burlesque Klub and their special guests for an evening of glamour, humor … and tassels. The cozy theatre, located in the bottom of the boat and decked out in red velour, has an intimate and sexy setting, heated up further on stage with the talented local and international burlesque performers. The night I went our favorite was a “boylesque” performer who added some serious sass to his (her) sultry disrobing. For a complete date night, enjoy a reasonably priced dinner at the restaurant of the Nouvelle Seine offering gorgeous views of the … saintly cathedral… looking rather seductive at night. You can get reduced price tickets for only 10 euros on Billet Reduc here.
