Ten Things You Didn’t Know About Paris

1. There’s a second, secret river.

Everyone knows about the Seine, but few have ever heard of la Bièvre. This small river once trickled through southern Paris, emptying into the Seine a few blocks east of Notre Dame, next to the tiny crooked street bearing its name today. During the Industrial Revolution, mills, tanneries, and dye-makers set up shop along the river’s banks, turning it into a toxic dump. Its polluted path within the city’s boundaries was eventually filled over in 1912, but it’s still flowing down there through underground tunnels.
