Paris has been featured prominently on the silver screen, but its importance in cinema history is more than just an on-screen star. The first ever public film screening was held in the City of Light in 1895, instantly sparking a strong national love of cinema. The once-200 cinemas have gradually dwindled to less than half, but thankfully—in an age of multiplexes—a third of these are still independently run (and have played a vital role in the careers of filmmakers such as Jean Cocteau and Francois Truffaut).
