A Eco-Friendly Concert in a Trendy, Central Location
Founded in 1989, COCO-MAT is more than just a bed company. It has turned beds into a work of art. All of its mattresses, pillows and sleep products are handmade using natural materials and at their own factory in Xanthi, Northern Greece. It has a sustainable approach, respecting nature by being virtually neutral carbon footprint and recycle 96% of their waste or unused material.
The hotel is situated in the posh district of Kolonaki, a very real neighborhood where you’re more likely to cross paths with attractive Athenians than camera touting tourists. The stylish district has a fantastic range of upscale shops, modern cafés and excellent restaurants, plus it’s near some popular museums, has subway and bus links nearby and is also walking distance to many of Athens top sites. The area is also perfect architecture fans since it has a great collection of buildings dating back to the interwar era and the Athenian modernism movement. The hotel itself is found within a refurbished apartment building from 1935. Vast refurbishment and a sleek new designer facade converted the building into a fantastic hotel of understated luxury, equipped with all the modern amenities today’s travelers are seeking.
Design and Supreme Comfort
At first it might seem a little strange to be staying in a “shop”, however, it actually gives the feeling of being at a part of Athens. The incredibly welcoming, young staff might also have a lot to do with this. Whisked away to your room, you are in your own peaceful and homey haven, especially if you’ve splurged on one of the spacious suites and lofts that make up the hotel’s 39 rooms. We were more than comfortable in a Boulevard room, complete with a balcony, gorgeous bathroom with a huge shower and of course, COCO-MAT’s trademark cloud-like mattresses, pillows and linen. The rooms all feature natural materials, a subdued color palette of beiges and greys, light wood and other attractive decorative elements.
Hip Additional Facilities
If you haven’t booked one of their vast suites, fear not, the hotel has two very comfy extended living spaces. The first is their “Honesty Bar,” found on the bottom floor and with a range of help yourself and write down what you take snack items as well as a tasty breakfast each morning (included in your room rate) and an all-day menu of beverages, small meals and other nibbles. You can also have these up on the hotel’s wonderful rooftop terrace (also open to non-guests so if you’re in the area, stop by for a drink!). Featuring a funky mural, comfortable seating areas and a great view of the city, this is where we relaxed at the end of a long day of walking, accompanied by some local cheese, charcuterie, excellent Greek wine and a spectacular sunset! The perfect way to end of day before sliding into our sublime beds…
